Met Gala Theme Revealed

Awards season may well bring us a merry-go-round of lavish designer gowns but no event draws out the big fashion guns quite like the Met Gala. Attending by actors, musicians and fashion industry heavyweights alike, it’s undoubtedly the one night of the year when everyone really lets loose and goes all out extravagant with their look (unless you’re Kanye and you turn up in jeans because the man defies all reason).  Always inspired by the theme for the annual Costume Institute, this year will no doubt bring the most conceptual styles yet, with the focus of the exhibition being none other than the legendary Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons.

Rei Kawakubo will be the first living designer since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 to be the sole subject of the annual fashion exhibit. “Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past forty years,” said Andrew Bolton, (curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute). “By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.

Known for her highly conceptual aesthetic, this years attendees will have decades of unique designs from which to mine their outfit inspiration. I for one cannot wait to see what fabulous creations they come up with – I have a feeling Sarah Jessica Parker and Rihanna are going to be the ones to knock this one out of the park.
