A

nyone like me who is missing their X-Men fix can breathe a sigh of relief. They’re

coming back (or at least one of them is).

The Wolverine

sees Hugh Jackman reprise his

role after previous spin off

X-Men: Origins

and shows that the elusive anti-hero has lost

neither his bark nor his bite. Another familiar face is his lost love Jean Grey (Famke Janssen)

who was last seen transformed and brought apparently back from the dead as Phoenix.

Events take place in contemporary Japan, with Wolverine facing a potential life or death

battle that will leave even him with inescapable scars and consequences that will change him

forever. Having established his reputation as the tough guy of the series, here Jackman shows

the more vulnerable side of his character but that this only leaves him stronger overall.

With action as sharp as his claws, Wolverine shows that this is one X-Man that is far from

being ready for retirement. Originally conceived as a prequel to the X-Men series, director

James Mangold

(Walk The Line, Knight & Day, 3:10 To Yuma)

decided instead to set it as a sequel

following on from

The Last Stand.

The claws are out and everyone’s favourite X-Man has had his sharpened.
