Amanda Blake

gives us an account of the latest films on the big screen.

P

roving that a man in tights is less comedy and

more ‘out of this world’ hero sees the return of

Superman this summer. Forget about the mid-90s

series and more recent incantations, this is a back to

basics return to the original comics. Henry Cavill dons

the tights and red cape, however there was a bit of an

upset over the issue of Superman’s infamous hair curl

and its omission. Hair issues aside, Cavill proves a more

than worthy successor to the legacy of Christopher

Reeve while Amy Adams is a Lois Lane for the modern

era. With a cast of recognisable faces, including Russell

Crowe as Superman Senior Jor El and Kevin Costner as

his adopted father, the most surprising change has to be

the casting of former CSI actor Laurence Fishburne in

the role of Perry White.

With Zach Snyder

(Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen)

at the helm and the screenplay co-written by Batman

trilogy director Christopher Nolan, this is a return to

form for the superhero. However it could have been

a very different line up, since Zac Efron and Armie

Hammer were both potential Clarks and candidates for

the role of Lois ranged from Natalie Portman to Anne

Hathaway.

The film released to coincide with the 75th

anniversary of Superman’s first comic issue, is a

perfectly timed proof that real men do indeed wear

tights.

Release date: 14th June 2013
