Travelling further back in time, the restrictive pencil skirts
of the post-war era and billowing ball skirts of fifties haute
couture were present in many collections.
Award winning Turkish designer
Bora Aksu
looked to the
post-war era for inspiration this autumn/winter, a time when
women flaunted convention and controlled their own destiny.
Focusing on dancehall stars, The Dolly Sisters, Aksu presented a collection of figure
hugging separates. The utilitarian palette of navys, khakis and creams was contrasted
with bright fuchsias to symbolise the Dolly’s bruised hearts. With high necklines,
textured knit sheathes and corsets the restrictive elements of the post-war lifestyle are
effectively conveyed in a wearable selection of looks.

John Rocha
once again offered a spellbinding and romantic
display of true craftsmanship in a collection inspired by the bright landscapes of the
Wicklow countryside. Model of the moment, Cara Delevingne, opened the show in
a standout A-line dress detailed with delicate hand-sewn flowers. Proving the endless
possibilities of crochet, Rocha presented a series of open work knitwear dresses with
nipped in waists and billowing skirts reminiscent of 1950s haute couture. The contrast
of the girly dresses and Mary-Janes in rose, lemon and khaki with black tulle head
dresses gave Rocha’s romance a darker element. The innovative drape coats provided
an edge whilst attention to detail in the fine stitching and crochet circles added an all-
important finish to a one of a kind collection.
