The Bite Magazine - Autumn/Winter 2023 - Issue 34

bitecatwalk C het Lo’s AW23 ‘Bioluminescence’ collection is everything that glows; however, it is not neces- sarily in his telltale bright neon colour palettes or eye-catching textures. No, things were a bit more sombre this season, edited and quietly executed, save for the rainbow of food colour-dyed tongues the models flashed while walking down the catwalk. Lo presented a more restrained line-up to reflect on his recent brave admission of his suffering from depression. He explained that while in the past he was always in- spired by the more exotic and exuberance of nature, he also let himself get carried away with the popularity of the internet and tech scene of flashy colour, patterns and prints; he’s now turning his attention back to his first love, nature. After his mental health diagnosis, Lo said he wanted to create a collection that reflected his jour- ney of finding the light in the darkness, his way home. As such, these pieces still showcased his known-for popcorn knits, fun and funky patterns and relief cut- outs, but this time, there were only hints of colour here and there for added dramatic effect. I love that he main- tained his aesthetic but made a courageous effort to present a truly personal collection that represents his current emotions. I admire his talent and strength, as most would try to hide such a revelation. www.chetlo.com CHET LO
