bitefilms W e often see the 1920s as the jazz age, with big brass bands, flappers and sheiks dancing the Charleston and foxtrot, but what about the Hollywood transition from silent movies to sound films? Director Damien Chazelle captures this charade in his epic period comedy-drama Babylon which chron- icles the rise and fall of multiple characters during this period. Picture loud parties, champagne flowing, people jumping into the pool, an elephant and crocodile in the room (not at the same time) and going crazy. As Brad Pitt tells his date for the night, “I think what we have here in Hollywood is high art. Its…” Margot Robbie jumps in mid-sentence atop the shoulder of a man screaming, “party time, sparkle cocks!”. In one scene, Brad tells an agent, “When I first moved to LA, you know what the signs on all the doors read? No actors or dogs allowed. I changed that.” In another scene, Margot is accused of stealing another actress’ scene by icing her nipples to perk up through her dress. This fast-paced comedy-drama will surely keep you on your toes with the shenanigans. Brad’s character, Jack Conrad, is centred on actor and director John Gilbert. At the same time, Margot plays aspiring actor Nellie LaRoy who recruits Manny (Diego Calva) and Jack to help her find success and stardom. She admitted she sneaked an unscripted kiss with Brad during film- ing.“When else will I get the chance to kiss Brad Pitt?” Jean Smart, Tobey Maguire, Jovan Adepo and Li Jun Li join the ensemble.
