H UI’s SS21 collection entitled ‘Chinese Lantern’ paid tribute to its ancestral roots with designs based on the Hanfu, cheongsam (also known as qipao), and Tang suit using intricate and highly intricate designs embroi- dered traditional fabrics and styling. Although the collection was solidly based on Chinese dressing, there was a definite vein of pieces blended with Eastern and Western concepts. This was evident in another overall theme of the collection: its lovely take on American vintage from the early 20th cen- tury; several pieces even brought some elements from as early as 19th-century fashions. This interpretation is seen in several pieces with dark navy colour schemes with stark white piping details, trimmings and boxy profiles, with others shown with lovely floral motifs. The looks all felt like what would possibly come up after raid- ing your grandmother’s or great-grandmother’s wardrobe that had been carefully preserved and then altered to fit with today’s sought-after feminine figures i.e. dresses were ei- ther form-fitting or hung in straight shifts, but nothing was overly voluptuous. In its entirety, the collection was simple, elegant, utterly graceful and refreshingly playful. So many brands are showing what they think the future will be with über comfortable wear and androgyny leading the way, so it was a welcomed delight to have a collection recreate some of fashion’s most iconic and feminine designs.
