H eart-rending film Land is one of those movies that will shake your heart and soul and bewilder your spirit. Touching to the core Land is actress Robin Wright’s directorial debut; the poignant story of one woman’s search for meaning in the vast and harsh American wilderness, off the grid in Wyoming. Wright also stars in the film with co-star Demián Bichir, who plays a local hunter and quite frankly saves her from the brink of death. The film first premiered at the Sundance Film Fes- tival and available to watch in cinemas. Land is a drama about multiple forms of isolation. As we can see from the trailer, Edee Holzer (Wright) is isolated emotionally by a horrible tragedy and finds herself unable to stay connected to the world she once knew. In the face of this uncertainty, she retreats to the mag- nificent but unforgiving wilds of the Rockies. Her broken soul refuses any contact with the outer world, and I guess, by luck, or maybe destiny, she is saved by Miguel (Bichir) while living in the remote cabin and trying to live off the land. It turns out that these two people will eventually find comfort in each others’ company and relief from their grieves. Miguel gives her the tools to survive, not only in the wildlands of America but while living with her own self. Unfor- tunately, the hunter also has some personal trauma and grief to bring on the hunting trip. Beautiful landscapes and scenery further grab the attention of the film, creating a powerful piece of work, with jaw-dropping views and strong actors recalling the need to connect not only with nature but one’s self.
