The Bite Magazine - Spring/Summer 2021 - Issue 29

C hristian Siriano has proven again that he has what it takes to make it in the sig- nificant fashion leagues. Having won the grand prize on Project Runway in 2008, Siriano has continued to remain steadfast in his convictions of designing current, yet timeless, cloth- ing for people of all sizes, shapes and heritages. Labelled “The new king of old-school glamour” by Elle , he once again presented a line that played on representing silhouettes from the ‘80s and ‘90s - with a modern yet quirky twist. This season, after leaving New York City to quarantine in his new home inWestport, Connecticut, Siriano had a bit of time on his hands to slow down a bit. However, this superman was able to take a slight pause and reminisce on his past while at home by watching old ’80s and ’90s movies like Clueless, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead and Troop Beverly Hills and flipping through his old comic book collection. This ride down memory lane is what sparked the inspi- ration for this current collection. The show was held in his Westport home’s backyard to a sparse, socially distanced crowd. Beginning the show with a heavy nod to a new take on what Cher and her friends wore in Clueless, models strolled by on the grass in looks that ranged in volume, vivid colours and whimsy. Nothing was repeated as far as sil- houette or style went, but more so, he played with patterns, prints, laces, sheer fabrics and draping and tailoring details, as well as giant tulle ball gowns and ruffled Flamenco skirts! Siriano showed a collection that took the viewer on a trip back but made it accessibly modern too. I think this season’s line-up was to provide some glimmer of hope and fun during a time when everything seems so lost and dark. One of his famous quotes is,“It is better to be overdressed than under- dressed,” and darlings, if there was ever a time that we needed to hear this, it’s now.Thank you, Christian, for reminding us all that life’s too short to be boring; for making all those masks and those giant tulle skirts! https://christiansiriano.com CHRISTIAN SIRIANO
