M ore of a horror movie than an account of X-men superheroes discovering their abil- ities for the first time under the soothing tuition of Professor X, The New Mutants is about a group of young mutants being held in a secret facility who have to fight to save themselves. Set in a time where it was perhaps feared that their discovery will cause cata- strophic problems for the world, their treatment appears to be reminiscent of the horror stories you hear when children or young people are kidnapped by psychos. Intended to be the thirteenth and final instalment in the X-Men film series, the trust of the mutants that Professor X and his team tried to build up over the years seems to have been turned on its head with this superhero horror film. But let’s be realistic! As with any unusual and misunderstood thing, scientific experiments are likely to be done on ‘alien-like’ creatures, so mutants, in this case, aren’t any different.The imagina- tion of what could be done to them is often beyond belief. Directed by Josh Boone and based on the comic of the same name, the film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, MaisieWil- liams (fresh from finale series Game of Thrones ) as Rahne Sinclair/ Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage, along with Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes, a mentor and medical doctor who appears to have powers of her own by generating a protective bio-field around her. With their numerous mutant skills including Magik who can use teleportation discs to travel;Wolfs- bane who can turn into a wolf but struggles to reconcile her religious beliefs with this power; Cannon- ball who can propel himself into the air and be invulnerable while doing so; Sunspot who has the ability to manipulate solar energy; and Mirage who has the power to create illusions drawn from the fears and desires of a person’s mind, we are sure that they will eventually come together and use their powers to fight back.
