OF THE APES
After the 2001 remake saw Mark Wahlberg endure the worst detour since
Titanic and the iceberg, this new offering begins instead in twentieth
century San Francisco with just a little bit of genetic engineering in order to
develop a cure for patients with Alzheimer’s. What could possibly go
wrong? Try the enhanced intellectual development in the ape subjects and
what leads to a battle with humans in an all out war. James Franco leads
the cast, alongside Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pinto and comedy actor
John Lithgow, while leaving Hogwarts well and truly behind is Tom Felton.
Following in the ape footsteps of Roddy McDowell is Andy Serkis as the
prominent Caesar, with a make up and computer effects job that puts his
previous work as King Kong, among others, almost to shame
.
After several delays in release dates, the Rise of the Planet of the Apes
is now set to arrive on screens in August 2011, ten years after its
predecessor. Unlike the first modern interpretation, this will be missing the
late Charlton Heston but hopefully there is less chance of seeing as many
loincloths. Instead I’m personally hoping that when it came to the filming
schedule, James Franco left his drag outfit and blonde wig in the dressing
room after hosting the Oscars. See what happens when it comes out on

August 2011. With a reputed $90 million dollar budget however,
director Rupert Wyatt looks set to be giving his audiences a film of King
Kong sized proportions.
FRIGHT NIGHT
Looking for something different to the romantic comedies and testosterone-
packed action films that seem to fill every summer cinema schedule?
Dreamworks’ latest offering is a remake of the 1985 original, with Colin
Farrell and Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin among the cast, along with former
Doctor Who, David Tennant, as television host Peter Vincent. In a role
following on from 2010’s Kick Ass, Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays what
has to be the character with the best name so far of 2011: Evil Ed.
Yelchin’s character Charlie Brewster appears to have pretty
much everything going his way, and maybe things could be just a lit-
tle too good to be true. After the mysterious Jerry arrives as his
neighbour, Charlie finds something unsettling about the new guy
next door. Strange things begin to happen and fairly soon
Charlie becomes convinced there’s only one explanation possi-
ble: Jerry must be a vampire. With no one willing to believe his
story, it’s going to be up to Charlie to face Jerry and defeat the
killer, with some help from Tennant’s character Vincent. Hopefully
this looks to be a vampire story with less teenage angst, replaced
instead by a predator with somewhat more bite than bark.
