Its predecessor, the converted combustion-engine X3 and one of BMW’s most successful and versatile models, of‑ fered a range of petrol, diesel, plug‑in hybrid and full‑M performance variants. It delivered driv‑ er‑focused ergonomics, solid materials, intuitive controls and enough space for a family without feeling bulky on the road. With the fully electric counterpart, deemed a software‑defined SUV at heart, the iX3 is engi‑ neered around intelligence, efficiency and seam‑ less digital interaction rather than electrifying an existing template. At its core sits the ‘Heart of Joy’, a next‑generation controller that orches‑ trates power delivery, braking, recuperation and steering with uncanny precision, giving the car a sense of intuition that borders on telepathy. Efficiency comes from BMW’s 6th‑generation eDrive system, which pairs highly advanced motors with a new cylindrical‑cell battery ar‑ chitecture to deliver long range, rapid charging and minimal energy loss. Tying the whole expe‑ rience together is the Panoramic iDrive display, a sweeping, windscreen‑wide interface designed to keep the driver informed without overwhelm‑ ing them, turning the cabin into a digital space that feels like a natural extension of the driver’s senses. What Drives This Power Model? The iX3 has two motors, an electrically synchro‑ nous unit at the rear and a compact asynchro‑ nous one at the front. It combines a capacity of 469 hp and 645 Nm, flinging this family‑friendly SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle, a term coined by BMW) from 0–62 mph in 4.9 seconds. The new cylindrical‑cell battery architecture boosts ener‑ gy density by 20 per cent and charging speeds by 30 per cent, while the 800‑volt system allows for a frankly outrageous 400 kW charging rate. That means 231 miles of range in ten minutes, or 10 to 80 per cent in 21 minutes. With a usable 108.7 kWh of battery and up to 500 miles of WLTP range, the iX3 becomes the longest‑range BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) you can buy in the UK today. Charging is fast and clever through BMW’s new switching matrix, letting the iX3 charge at 400V DC stations with‑ out breaking a sweat. At the same time, the AC Charging Professional package introduces bidi‑ rectional charging for the first time in a BMW. With the right wallbox, it can power your home at up to 11 kW or run appliances at 3.7 kW via Vehicle‑to‑Load. There’s even a Multifunction Charger that lets you charge or discharge the battery on the go, ideal for powering tools, devices or, if you’re feel‑ ing dramatic, your entire campsite. The charging flap uses AI to open and close itself when it senses your intentions, which is either brilliant or mild‑ ly unsettling, depending on how you feel about cars reading your mind. Beneath all of this sits a new electronics architecture powered by four high‑performance ‘superbrains’, each responsible for a different domain. The wiring harness is now divided into four zones, reducing weight by 30 per cent and eliminating 600 metres of wiring. Smart eFuses manage power distribution with the kind of pre‑ cision that would make an aerospace engineer nod approvingly. The ‘Heart of Joy’ processes information ten times faster than conventional systems, enabling instantaneous power delivery, silky‑smooth transitions and the kind of agility that makes you forget you’re driving a family SUV.
