bitecars F errari’s latest plug-in hybrid flagships, the 849 Te- starossa and its open-top sibling, the 849 Testarossa Spider, are designed to push the boundaries of perfor- mance and design. These models mark a bold new chapter in Maranello’s hybrid supercar lineage, succeeding the SF90 Stradale and Spider. They pay homage to the legendary Tes- ta Rossa, Italian for ‘red head’, first used on the 500 TR in 1956, a nod to Ferrari’s iconic red-painted cam covers and one of its famous road-going models, the 1984 Testarossa. The vehicles’ dynamics were developed to improve per- formance, consistency and accessibility, while maintaining a high level of driving pleasure. Lateral acceleration was optimised through the suspension geometry and manage- ment of the electronic vehicle dynamics controls to provide a faster response to steering wheel inputs and improve the mechanical grip of the rear axle. Longitudinal acceleration benefits from a quicker response to the accelerator pedal and an increase in maximum available power. The gearshift strategy has been refined to provide a more progressive feel and reduce actuation times. Improved brak- ing efficiency, pedal feel, and travel are achieved through the ABS Evo developed for the SF90 XX Stradale. The sound has been calibrated to accurately replicate accelerator response in terms of quality through the rev range. FIVE (Ferrari In- tegrated Vehicle Estimator) is an estimation system capable of creating a digital twin that replicates the behaviour of the car in real time. What Drives This Power Model? At the heart of the 849 Testarossa lies a reengineered twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 830 cv (818 hp) and ac- celerating from 0-62 mph in 2.25 seconds. It’s paired with three electric motors and a high-voltage battery, delivering a staggering 1,050 hp combined, making it the most pow- erful series-production Ferrari to date. The advanced plug- in hybrid (PHEV) system, derived from Ferrari’s Formula 1 expertise, offers 15.5 miles of all-electric range, ensuring blistering performance and urban usability. A new, larger turbocharger with F80-derived low-friction bearings and an innovative heat shield on the turbine cas- ing, inspired by the 296 GT3, improves the thermal man- agement in the engine compartment. The materials and aerodynamics of the compressor wheels and turbine were optimised, and a refined calibration strategy was introduced to minimise turbo lag and maintain the engine’s responsive- ness. The intercooler was optimised to manage power in- crease and improve thermal efficiency. Both models mark a revolution in the concept of a Ferrari V8 mid-rear berlinetta (Italian term for a sporty, two-door coupé) inspired by the 1970 Sports Prototypes, with sharp, geometric lines that create a unique, timeless design. The unity between form and function has enabled impressive aerodynamic performance. The total downforce of 415 kg at 250 km/h represents a 25 kg increase over the SF90 Stradale, and provides a 15% boost in cooling power for the power- train and brakes. Inside the Cabin The cockpit is more enveloping and ergonomic than before. Inspired by the F80, the central sail motif with the inte- grated gear-change gate improves component positioning and makes them more accessible. The new steering wheel, equipped with digital and analogue buttons, including the iconic Engine Start button, elevates the driving experience
