The trench coat modelled on former slave Olaudah Equiano’s distinct style featured ruffled sleeves combined with a traditional British raglan cut, storm flaps and minimal topstitching. The culture and style that Caribbean and African migrants brought to Britain are highlighted in the SS22 ‘The Sound of Movement’ collection. Classic British cuts meet West African accents in large cel- ebratory collars and traditional African silhouettes with flared sleeves. The Agbada style, a four-piece male attire consisting of a large free-flowing outer robe, an undervest, long trousers and a hat worn by Yoruba men, is reflected through the drop shoul- ders in the blue and green Freetown shirt. Motion expressed the AW22 ‘Poetics of Movement’ collection to demonstrate instinctual survival and expressive art. It examined human survival and attempted to explain how movement lies at our core. The brand worked with local craftspeople in Freetown using fabrics developed by the artisans to punctuate the show in brilliant oranges, ocean greens and vibrant yellows. Aishatu dresses and denim jackets featured hand-drawn and hand-em- broidered Nomoli figures from Sierra Leone’s Mende and Kissi tribes. The brand used motion again for its SS23 ‘Freedom of Movement’ collection, which is derived from a borderless society where merging cultures coexist with constant migration. Its design team shared family photos representing their diverse back- grounds from Europe to South Asia to West Africa. Latvian-American painter Mark Rothko’s blue, green, and brown colour palette blended fluidly throughout the collection, providing layers from his multi-diverse heritage. Collaborating with Choose Love, an organisa- tion supporting refugee communities worldwide, produced an exclusive t-shirt design in two colour options. Labrum London reimagined the organisa- tion’s logo, originally designed by fashion designer Katharine Hammett, renowned for her political t-shirts using the monogram print and framed by the brand’s ‘Designed by an Immigrant’ taping.
