Lepidoptera, taken from the ancient Greek words ‘lepis’ (scale) and ‘pteron’ (wing), encompasses diverse and beautiful moths and butterflies. These creatures are celebrated for their intricate life cycles and their wings’ delicate, ornate features, creating patterns and colours as diverse as their environments. “We’re so excited to introduce our first interactive jewellery collection, Lepidoptera, inspired by but- terflies and moths,” Suvi said. “What sets it apart is that while the appearance of butterflies inspires many jewellery pieces, we go much deeper. Thanks to the interactive nature of our designs, we can capture aspects of the creatures’ actual behaviour - something traditional jewellery can’t achieve.” The collection features a ring that delicately flutters, ear- rings that gracefully curl, and a bracelet that wraps and shifts. Although nature is vital to Suvi, it’s not her only source of inspiration. “With each collection, I aim to tell a different story and push the boundaries of physics,” she explained. “I want to explore how much life can be infused into an object through stored energy and how, for example, chemical reactions can add new layers of storytelling. The Contrast Club was created for people inspired by magic and the unexpected, giving us the freedom to experiment and play.” In the future, The Contrast Club plans to apply these new techniques and technologies to other areas of luxury goods. “To create dynamic move- ments, we need to introduce new manufacturing technology to the traditional jewellery industry,” James added. “For example, innovations in watch- making allow us to craft tiny, intricate mechanisms that can be used to tell stories. Tradition is impor- tant to us. We’re not trying to change how jewellery is made but to add a new layer of wonder to delight our customers.” The Moth Ring and Moth Ring Gold in 18-karat gold and patina capture the delicate beauty of a moth in motion that breathes and shakes its wings when prompted. When they find a safe place, the caterpil- lar grips onto the leaves and starts moving its head in an age-old circular dance to produce silk threads. It may use this silk spun around the leaves for pro- tective shelter to rest while eating its way through the world or creating a strong and safe cocoon for its final transformation into a moth or butterfly. The caterpillar’s silk cocoon safeguards its metamor- phosis and enriches the forest ecosystem by con- tributing used cocoons as havens for biodiversity.
