The Bite Magazine - Spring/Summer 2022 - Issue 31

C HOCHENG is a womenswear designer label launched by designer Cho Cho Cheng who studied fashion and costume design at the Parsons School of Design and took an apprenticeship in Savile Row, London, to learn traditional British tailoring. Her first store opened in 2010 at 838 MadisonAvenue, New York, and a second store followed in 2015 at Seasons Place, Beijing. The designer pays attention to detail and uses only 100% natural and cruelty-free materials. All fabrics are sustainable and produced in Europe. At the same time, the garments are hand-sewn in London using traditional Savile Row tailoring and sewing techniques, including the shoulder pads, embroidered buttons, and inseam buttonholes to decorative silk petals that are handmade from natural materials. For environmental and aesthetic reasons, the designer forbids the use of commercial iron-on interfacing and machine finishing. Jackets and coats were partly lined in traditional sports jackets allowing custom- ers to see all the padding, stiffening, basting, binding, and interfacing done by hand.Woven garments are manufactured in London, while knitwear and accessories are made in Italy. For Spring-Summer 2022, CHOCHENG took us on a journey through ‘The Intoxicating Concubine’, a classic opera about Yang Guifei, the famous royal consort, whose beauty stunned the flowers into submission, thus becoming the Mimosa. This collection utilised the elements CHOCHENG is notorious for, such as its rich colour palettes, intricately hand-sewn designs and meticulous attention to detail. The show began with a close-up shot of a bottle labelled ‘drink me’ with sandals, pearls and jewellery that hinted at the pieces presented in the show. https://chocheng.com bitecatwalk
