This animated and pre-recorded runway show by the uber-talented Chinese designer, Annakiki, was utterly dizzy - ing to say the very least, but dazzling as a whole! Twists, turns, swirls and twirls; the video takes one’s mind on a hypnotising trip down a black and white rabbit hole of the futuristic landscape. However, it’s appropri- ate as the collection that walked this season featured her signature highly metamorphosed, dreamlike pieces. As a relative newcomer to Milan Fashion Week, Annakiki debuted her first col - lection in 2017 and has been showing to an eager industry every season since. This AW21 show proved once again that she and her fanciful inter- pretation of attire are here to stay. The 48-look line-up opened with a poof! A voluptuous, white ruffled coat worn over a full hooded white bodysuit and white platform boots sailed past much like a fluffy white cloud, trailing behind it a solid white men’s suit and strapless long-haired white ‘Yeti-like’ dress. Things then took a turn towards the Matrix with look #4, a pair of black leather pants and cropped sculpted shoulder moto jacket with an iridescent sheen and look #6, a full-length black bubble hemmed gown and leather jacket. From here, the collection displayed more of her tell-tale talent of playing with size, scale, silhouette, and fit in a mix of textural and printed fabrics. As a brand, Annakiki aims to disturb the ‘norm’ and manipulate a dif- ferent idea of what’s current and imminent in the world of fashion. “Breaking down technology’s cold - ness, it embraces a bold and futuristic design language, defined by novel techniques and unique details.” She wants her customers and fans to see themselves freed from the confines of what’s given and what’s expected, so to speak, and to look inward and free oneself to be unique. Or, at least that’s how I’ve always interpreted her work. Her brand identity is inspiring, and this collection while I must say a tad subdued for her, was still highly custom and ethereally beautiful. www.annakiki.com Annakiki
