Daisy Collection Jada Brookes learns about the ethical mining of diamonds and gemstones through Lebrusán Studio’s sustainable ethos and jewellery collections. E thical jewellery designer and founder of Leb- rusán Studio, Arabel Lebrusán is described by BBC News reporter Alice Bhandhukravi as “an extremely talented jeweller” with exceptional taste and attention to detail that sets her apart. “She has great flair for interpreting a client’s design concept, not to mention enormous skill in executing the fin- ished product.” The leading, awarding-winning artist and key founder of the ethical jewellery movement, has dedicated over 15 years to create beautiful jewellery. Having begun her journey as a fashion jewel- lery designer, Arabel travelled to the Far East and learned the trade. Apart from being a trained gemolo- gist, she holds a Masters Degree in Jewellery Design from Central Saint Martin’s and a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art from the University of Madrid. For five years, she was the creative director of Leblas Jew- ellery - the first ethical jeweller on London’s famed Sloane Street - before becoming a designer and con- ductor of her brand, Lebrusán Studio. As an artist, Arabel is blessed with a sharp and observant eye and has a way of connecting the seemingly unconnected. Not only is she talented in creating masterpieces, but she is passionate about the skills, traditional craftsmanship, trade and cul- tures. She commissions the best craftsmen in the UK and Spain to bring her designs to life. For example, her bridal jewellery is finished in Hatton Garden by skilled jewellers who each specialise in their specific stage of the process. She does not support any form of exploitation whether it is individuals or the environment and therefore ensures all precious metals and gemstones used in her jewellery are sustainably and ethically sourced. “Arabel was one of the first UK jewellers to embrace Fairtrade Gold and remains a passionate advocate for responsible jewellery. She is influenc- ing the way industry and consumers view jewellery - using her collections to help change the world,” said Victoria Waugh from the Fairtrade Foundation. British craftsmanship has contributed enormously to the history of jewellery crafts. From diamond polish- ers removing minute flaws - a painstaking process that requires intense concentration and a great deal of experience - to diamond mounters setting stones into platinum on a microscopic scale.
