The Bite Magazine - Autumn/Winter 2021 - Issue 30

O nly cupid knows how much we have missed Jenifer Lopez and her rom-com films! Marry Me is the latest J Lo film project about two strangers who get married within seconds after seeing each other. J Lo stars as Kat Valdez and Owen Wilson as Charlie Gilbert, with Colombian superstar, Maluma, as Bastian, who makes his first film debut. The film is based on the graphic novel by Bobby Crosby and is “a modern love story about celebri- ties, marriage and social media” with a screenplay adapted by John Roger and Tami Sagher and directed by Kat Coiro. Lopez is one of the producers, along- side her longtime pal, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, who worked with her on Maid in Manhattan (2002) and Hustlers (2019). Kat Valdez and her partner, music icon, Bastian, are a celebrity powerhouse couple. As superstars, their upcoming wedding is slated to be a huge specta- cle—they have a joint hit called ‘Marry Me’ and their wedding will be live-streamed in front of an audience of fans. But just moments before the couple is due to tie the knot, Kat finds out that Bastian has been cheating on her with her assistant. On this note, she impulsively chooses to wed a random audience member instead, Charlie Gilbert, a divorced math teacher who unwillingly attended the event at the behest of his teenage daughter and his best friend, Parker Debbs (Sarah Silverman). There are a few questions left unanswered? Can love bridge the gap between two people from different worlds in the harsh world of entertainment and social media? Could a very impulsive decision be a sign of two soul mates finally meeting each other? I guess we will have to wait until Valentine’s Day 2022 to find out!
