The Bite Magazine - Autumn/Winter 2021 - Issue 30

bitefashion Using the backdrop of a building in New York City, streetwear label Chaance presented their FW21 collection through a livestream video that celebrates ‘90s street culture at New York Fashion Week. Jada Brookes admires the collection and the accompanying video. I t’s dynamic that New York City is diverse in terms of cul- ture and fashion so it was befitting for Korean streetwear label Chaance founded by Jihoon Shin and Taisuke Fuji- moto to centre their FW21 men’s and women’s fashion col- lection on celebrating the diversity and streetwear culture of this great city at New York Fashion Week for the first time. It also celebrates a sense of community, while highlighting the style and functionality of its ‘90s-inspired clothes. The livestream video created by Carlos Serrao and Monica May centres on hip-hop. It features two chapters: ‘a slice of life’ that offers an x-ray vision of an apartment depicting the various lifestyles of the community; from art to breakdance. The second chapter ‘vibe 97’ portrays a New York City fash- ion studio photoshoot mixed with a base of hip-hop culture. It was inspired by images and visual styles of fashion edito- rials from this era and pays homage to the rich and diverse culture of New York City. Chaance based their FW21 collection on the ‘90s street cul- ture to represent a transformation of hardship into a period of rich and flourishing, distinctive culture. “Our mission is to inspire and empower/engage street culture fashion. By creating groundbreaking fashionable items based on street culture style we aim to revolutionise into a future of high- end street fashion.” The collection is the brand’s first step towards the interpretation of high-end fashion mixed with street culture. It aims to transition a defiant, rough and soulful culture into high-end street fashion by adding new interpretations of design patterns and fabrics by switching up common fits and different patchworks. Classic pieces including overalls were updated, while graffiti art became bold prints on outerwear and athleisure wear were mixed into the overall collection. Hues of salmon and orange added a pop of colour to the col- lection alongside a more muted palette for the season ahead. The video shows two male models, one in dungarees and a white top and the other in a green sleeveless jacket with a black top and trousers coming out of a door on one level. The camera follows the second model down the stairs to the next level where he knocks on the door and a female model in a salmon with black piping crop top and trousers opens it and looks him up and down as if feeling him out. She walks past him and he follows her before the camera moves down to the next level. In the next scene, two men are playing chess - one is dressed in a grey and black outfit while the other is wearing dun- garees with a red and blue top. It pans up to two levels to a skater in a graffiti top and dark trousers before moving again to a street artist splattering paint on a grey canvas sheet dressed in a multicoloured puffer jacket that I would love for myself, with a blue top and slightly baggy pants. It then pans back to the chess players, with one standing and seemingly stressed as if he’s losing the game. Chaance FW21
