The Bite Magazine - Spring/Summer 2021 - Issue 29
bitedelicatessen In the mid-1960s, John and Charles took over the business and introduced hampers filled with luxury cakes, biscuits, puddings, and mince pies sold in big-name stores across the country. They went on to open the Beaverlac Home Bakery in Beverley on the same day as Decimalisation Day - 15 February 1971 - which saw Britain finally move to a system based on units of 10. This superseded the centu- ries-old system of 12 pence in a shilling and 20 shillings, or 240 pence, in a pound. The 1980s saw the demand for Arnett’s bakes continue to grow, and the business moved to a more significant site in Beverley Manor, Park Avenue, Hull. In the 1990s, there was further diversification at the Yorkshire Farm Bakery, where they produced a range of boxed cakes using innovative packaging. This innovation continued with the first run of cake bars with fillings, a new product offer to meet their customers’ increasing demands for convenience. Keeping with the times, the new Millennium of 2000 saw a demand for ‘gluten-free’, so the business produced a host of bakery products to cater to this growing market. How- ever, elsewhere, with calorie counting taking the joy out of eating, new-generation owners Tony and Terry Arnett decided to go back to their roots by doing what Jennie and Kathrine Adam did in the 1900s - making great tasting biscuits and cakes. They also bought small business Cart- wright & Butler, who were experts in homemade preserves. Today, Cartwright & Butler stands strong with a history of creating the most exceptional teatime treats for more than 115 years. Their passion is to continue producing the butteriest, creamiest and crumbliest bakes with no low-fat content or counting calories, because they believe this is what makes good food great. “The world might have changed since the seeds of our business were planted in the 1900s, but what we stand for hasn’t; the very best tasting treats that create moments of joy every single day.” Luxury hampers and food gifts are perhaps the brand’s most cherished staple items. Whether it’s celebrating a special occasion or a ‘just because’ treat for you, Cartwright & Butler’s carefully curated and lovingly packed hampers are bursting with tempting treats and little luxuries you’re guaranteed to love. For something simple, you could try the Afternoon Gift Selection Box with Lemon Curd, Butter Fudge and Butter Shortbread Rounds in cartons. How about the indulgent Champagne & Truffle Gift Box with de Beaupre Champagne and deluxe White Chocolate Selection? This ultimate sophisticated gift is presented in a sleek grey box with ribbon. For the larger sets, the Ingle- borough Poacher’s Basket Hamper is a delightful selection of Cartwright & Butler treats packed into one wearable sleek basket. Inside the wicker basket, you will find a duo of traditional English breakfast tea and rich café York blend coffee, great for a cold winter’s day. If you love to indulge in chocolate, this hamper contains delicious Belgian milk chocolate fudge, a selection box of Belgian chocolates, divine chocolate oat crumbles, and sea salted almonds coated in milk chocolate and chocolate wafer crisps. There is also a range of Cartwright & Butler’s finest preserves with fine cut orange breakfast marmalade and extra-fruit strawberry preserve made from field-grown strawberries as well as olive and garlic wheat flatbreads. One of my favourites is the Grosmont Hamper which con- tains elegant teatime treats such as classic all-butter salted caramel fudge, triple chocolate chunk biscuits, zesty lemon all-butter shortbread and traditional maple and pecan chocolate digestives. There is also a full-bodied bottle of Tonada Merlot Red Wine from Chile with plum and choc- olatey flavours and a Pure Prosecco Sparkling Wine Extra Dry bottle from Italy. Images courtesy of PR Shots
