The Hamper It’s All About Jada Brookes explores British brand Cartwright & Butler’s history and selection of delicious goodies in their luxury hampers. bitedelicatessen A fter their father died, leaving them with no income, Jennie and Kathrine Adam used their baking skills to sell cakes to make ends meet. Doing very well, they outgrew their kitchen and moved to their own bakery, bringing their sister Maria into the family business. It wasn’t long before the siblings had a reputation for making the best bread, pies, cakes, biscuits, puddings and preserves in Hull, East Yorkshire. They expanded their business further by joining forces with the Arnett family, who owned a chain of bakeries. Three decades later, in the 1930s, cousins Gordon and Kathleen Arnett took over the reins of the business. They opened a shop and café in Cottingham, and Gor- don opened another bakery in Hull’s Norfolk Street. It wasn’t until after the Second World War that he opened another premises - The Cake Shop in Beverley, in East Riding of Yorkshire. Always looking to the future, Gor- don had already planned to hand the baton to his sons John and Charles, although they were only eight and 12 at the time.
