bitecatwalk W alking high above the fray of the pandemic sweeping the city below, JasonWu presented his new contemporary and affordable line on the rooftop of Spring Studios in New York City. Transforming the space into a lavish and lush tropical oasis, unmasked models walked down a gently bending wooden planked runway to a very socially distanced audience. At the same time, the sounds of crashing waves serenaded in the background - perhaps an attempt to bring the illusion of a tropical escape and happier times for sure! The collection itself is based on Tulum, Mexico, whichWu refers to as his ‘home away from home’. As such, the line was what one would expect of casual holiday- in-the-sun-wear. Nothing over the top or complicated, but rather understated, easy-breezy complete looks with basic sundresses, kaftans, maxis, and separates in a subdued colour palette of burnt and rust oranges, inky navy blues, coral pinks and chartreuse with bold, modern floral, stripe and abstract prints. For a pinch of added flair,Wu incorporated fun pleating details around some necklines and waistbands, eyelet floral cutouts and synching tiebacks for a bit of interest to what may otherwise be a very ‘flat’ garment. Overall, each piece represented what I think Wu was trying to convey with this entireTulum themed show; so why push so hard? Life is hard enough, so take a breath, take a step back and relax. In a word, this new line from him was ‘relaxed’. The collection, as a whole, is universally flattering. It will undoubtedly appeal to a vast clientele, from the oversized shirts and long Bermuda shorts to the flowing calf-length dresses and skirts that could easily be worn together or effortlessly mixed and matched with other pieces in one’s existing summer wardrobe.
