Philopappos Hill, also known as the Hills of the Muses, is a green area to the southwest of the Acropolis that offers fantastic views of Athens. On your stroll up this hill, you will pass landmarks such as the Philo- pappos Monument, the Prison of Socrates, and the Tomb of Kimon. A visit to the National Archaeological Museum, the largest museum in Greece, is a must-do as it holds some of the most significant collections of antiquities in the world. It was es- tablished in 1829 to house and protect antiquities from all over Greece. It has operated from its neo-classical home since 1889. With over 11,000 exhibits dating back as far as the Neo- lithic period to the Late Antiquity, you will be fascinated with pieces that include the statue of Zeus or Poseidon and the Mask of Agamemnon. The hollow cast bronze statue of Zeus or Poseidon dating back to the early Classical period around 460 BC was found in a shipwreck off the island of Euboea. It is one of the few original pieces in existence from this time. Locals believe it is of Zeus rather than Poseidon. The gold death mask of Agam- emnon is one of the most famous gold artefacts of the Greek bronze age that dates back to the 16th century BC. It is one of five discovered in Mycenae in 1876 and covered the face of an important person in death.
