The Bite Magazine - Autmn/Winter 2020 - Issue 28

bitefilm you have the idea, from the moment of its creation, you can shrink time and bring it closer to the present. “You don’t have to wait for days, months, or years to make it happen. It goes fast.” She also discussed the resistance and mindfulness within society today. She finds that people are more accepting in comparison to 10, 15 years ago. Patricia acknowledges that a decade ago, people were not as familiar with meditation and most likely had tried it only at their local gyms. She added that by collectively raising the vibration of the planet through consciousness, mindfulness practices and meditation, people are becoming more aware. Practising this daily has changed and improved their lives; thus, they find it a new norm now. She accepts that after a lengthy lockdown with a lot of time to reflect and look within, people have discovered even more essential chi energy modalities. “I call it the hygiene of the soul,” Patricia said. “You take your shower every day because if you skip a few days, you’re going to start feeling a little filthy but you cannot just meditate once and expect that the whole month will be perfect. It’s a daily practice like brushing your teeth, like exercising. And to me, I want to integrate that practice as a norm, a standard for the entertainment in- dustry. Especially in the film industry where I worked and evolved meditation, intention setting and higher purpose to everything that I do with my team.” When it comes to her team, there are rules that the director strictly asks them to follow— for example, learning mindset, communication skills, and paying attention to the language they use. There are many words they are forbidden to pro- claim in her environment, such as ‘I can’t’. Patricia explained why: “when you say that you can’t do something, it means that you are not motivated and don’t know how to do it or you are giving the power away to the situation. “So I rather you tell me, Patricia, I won’t do it. Cause when you say I won’t do it; it means you don’t feel like doing it so you make that decision not to do it so you won’t do it. Or it could be you know you have limitations that prevent you from doing it so you won’t be able to do it. So [saying] ‘I can’t’ is not a good expression to use when they work with me.” The filmmaker also implements the same rules for herself and al- ways looks for ways to resolve issues by enquiring new skills, improving, and learning. The director also shared her morning practices to get aligned and be her best version. She confessed mornings are sacred to her, and she allows one to three hours in the morning just for her. Her day starts with meditation; physical practices such as going to the gym, stretching, dancing or simply walking in the park. Last but not least, self-development which includes listening to audiobooks, writing in a journal or educating herself on a topic or a dilemma that she needs to resolve. Patricia also tells her assistant not to book any meetings be- fore 2 pm. She added that it is not possible to organise every single day like that when you are in high demand or con- stantly travelling, but you can always find a way to wake up 15 minutes before to do your meditation and design your day with ease and flow. She explained, “It’s like a designer; if you don’t know how the costume looks you won’t know how to cut the fabric and sew it together. You have to plan it in advance, and that’s what I do through my meditation. I visualise the outcome of the venue, the results I want and how I want it to flow.” On this path of self-discovery through the mazes of cultures, languages, and influences, Patricia’s light is shining brighter than ever. She is undeniably a powerhouse on whose shoul- ders sits a countless number of artists. She is an artist whose ambition is to create films that inspire and empower audi- ences worldwide. She hopes through her work audiences can transform and reflect on themselves so that they can take action to change their world. Patricia uses her platform to tell visually striking, emotionally touching stories that leave every spectator touched to their core. With high anticipa- tion, we are looking forward to the release of Montreal Girls in 2021 knowing that it will leave a mark in the world of film- making. www.patriciachica.com
