Jada Brookes checks out some of the recent and soon-to-be released singles covering various genres of music. bite new music Same Mistakes E arlier this year in March, Toronto native, Hannah Georgas, shared her single ‘That Emotion’ from her collaboration with producer Aaron Dessner of American rock bandThe Nation- al. She again worked with him on her latest single ‘Same Mistakes’, a deeply personal song about reckoning with the past, presented in a bracingly vulnerable context. The video shows a silhouette of the singer captured in a frame and on a larger scale in the background. It is only towards the end of the track as the camera pans down from the wall and across the room, you realise her shadow was being reflected from her position on the stairs as she ponders over the lyrics of the song. It was an unexpect- ed twist to the coordination of the shot. “Over the years, I’ve been recognising patterns and habits I’ve creat- ed in order to protect myself in situations that are difficult,” Georgas explained. “I’m becoming more aware of how much my upbringing has had an affect on me. This song was inspired by learning how to accept the past and recognise when things come up and trying to learn from them,” she added. Evolving into an artist with a more global agenda, Georgas’ music has been featured in over 50 placements including an end credit us- age in HBO’s Girls and Degrassi: Next Class, Netflix’s reboot of the beloved Canadian franchise for teens.
