bite catwalk M elania Freire left us astonished as she cast us into the art world for her AW19 collec- tion here in Madrid. We gave her our ad- mission ticket and the designer welcomed us into her gallery exhibit of the artistic works of Eng- lish painter David Hockney. Within her designs, Freire has incorporated textile prints, adopting the significant forms and line work of the original artist, remaining true to Hockney’s artistic style by ensuring the structures of her designs remained abstract with the use of experi- mental asymmetrical cuts. For this exhibit, we needed only to sit and watch as the reproductions of this famous art style walked the runway. The designer’s beautiful interpretations of Hockney’s works allowed for her own personal experimentations this AW19. Hockney marks as a highly influential artist of the pop art era, recognisable for his unmistakable use of line and dashing colour. Accordingly, pastels are key for Freire’s colour palette to reflect the airy atmosphere created by the collection, not only the drape but in the textile design of each unique look. Shirtless oversized pantsuits with alternative collar placements, exaggerated flared trousers, and nonchalant skirts permitted freedom and carefree attitude to her womenswear.
