bite cars THOSE WHO SEE MORE T he new 720S Spider from McLaren is their most accom- plished convertible supercar which combines the thrill of open-air driving with unparalleled Super Series dynamic performance and sophistication. The light, stiff and extremely strong Monocage II-S car- bon fibre core features an Integrated Rollover Protection Structure (ROPS) which doesn’t need any additional strengthening compared to the coupe version. Thus this improvement ensures a convertible without compromise and guarantees exceptional dynamic agility. “The new McLaren 720S Spider offers an unparalleled blend of extreme per- formance, crafted luxury, driver in- volvement and daily usability – all with the additional exhilaration of open-air driving whenever required. As the most accomplished convertible super- car ever, the new Spider delivers across a remarkable spectrum of abilities to outstandingly high levels, and as the lightest in class with an increase of just 49kg over the 720S Coupe, [it] moves us even further ahead of our competition in the weight race,” said Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive. The design foundations of the new McLaren Spider began in 2017 with the 720S Coupe’s seamless and organic forms. By combining these qualities to maximise downforce, minimise drag, enhance powertrain cooling and opti- mise aerodynamic performance, these shapes produce an overall appearance akin to a futuristic sculpture, formed by the air that flows over, under, around and through it. The new, electrically actuated Retractable Hard Top (RHT) is seamlessly integrated into the design, as are the new buttresses. Images courtesy of McLaren
