The Bite Magazine Issue 17

W hen British-born singer-songwriter Anna Pancaldi was younger, she had to adapt to life in two different places: the first in Chappel, Colchester when she was seven years old and the second in Cape Town, South Africa when she was twelve. Since arriv- ing back in the UK, Anna has earned a place in a band formed by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, which composed music and recorded with Grammy award-winning engineer Simon Gogerly who counts artists such as No Doubt, U2, Massive Attack and Paloma Faith among those he has worked with. Earlier this year, Anna released her second EP Dear Joey produced by James Kenosha, who has produced several of Rhodes’ albums and EPs. The new EP follows her 2015 debut Black Tears, a release that entered at number six in the Singer Songwriter Chart on iTunes, positioned between James Bay and Ed Sheeran. Having previously met with Anna in Stoke Newington, north London, we recalled our first encounter, this time in north-west London where she played a show earlier this year at St Pancras Old Church for the launch of her new EP. Bite Magazine: Can you bring us up to that moment prior to the EP’s release? Anna Pancaldi: It has been a magical journey with a lot of hard work. I’ve overcome a lot of fears and learnt how to begin to build my career. Some of my most overwhelming and stand out moments were having my first debut and follow up EPs charting at numbers three and six in the iTunes Singer Songwriter Charts, being featured in the soundtrack of a Levi’s advert and getting my own infusion of gin! Ha-ha! Anna was recently chosen to write and perform a song for a new Levi’s com- mercial. She also stars in the ad for Levi’s Lot 700 jeans collection in 2015 singing the track, ‘A Little Bit of Love’; a fantastic piece of exposure for a fledg- ling artist. Gaining a National Diploma in Music Practice, Anna went on to write music and play, as she travelled through Nepal, South East Asia, South Africa and New Zealand. In 2012 Anna relocated back to London. Anna Pancaldi: Working with Levi’s, we were flown around to four countries in five days. For me, as an unsigned artist Anna Pancaldi Dear Joey Dayle Best speaks to singer-songwriter Anna Pancaldi about her music and working with jeans brand Levi’s. bite music
