The 20-year-old was brutally murdered in 2007 because she was perceived as ‘different’ and since her death, her family have been determined to “celebrate their cre- ative, bright and beautiful daughter and ensure that her lasting legacy was to have people challenge prejudice and intolerance everywhere, and in particu- lar toward subcultures.” Another event was ‘Dark Fashion on the Runway’ which consisted of a discussion about subculture fashion with Dazed & Con- fused Fashion Features Editor Emma Hope Allwood raising the topic of the relevance of subculture fashion within today’s mainstream fashion industry. Finally, this wonderful display of alter- native fashion would not have been complete without several catwalk shows being delivered throughout the three- day exhibition. Brands such as Voodoo Vixen has a collection of retro, classic and rockabilly styles designed for the modern woman; Queen of Darkness likes to experiment by blending differ- ent styles but remains detail orientated with a mixture of punk, rock and grunge street fashion influences; Bright & Beau- tiful draws inspiration from the classic silhouettes of the swinging ‘60s and chic ‘70s and offers a fresh and quirky AW16 collection that is perfect for the party season; and Collectif provides vintage style for modern life with a beautiful collection of vibrant, eye-catching pat- terns and feminine lines to recreate the look of the original 1940s and 1950s styling.
