By 2013, Ben & Jerry’s plan to complete their full expansion pro-
gramme to Fair trade ingredients.This means that they will be conver ting
up to 121 different chunks and swirls, including eleven different ingredi-
ents such as cocoa, banana, vanilla and other flavourings on a global scale.
To do this, they would be working with over 24,000 farmers through
Fair trade Co-ops worldwide, providing better income and reinvestments
into their farms, their families, their communities and their future. Now
that’s what I call looking out for your fellow man!
There are so many flavours to choose from in the Ben & Jerry’s range
of ice-creams that I wasn’t satisfied limiting myself to the glorious new
‘Wich. Although Caramel Chew Chew is my all-time favourite at the
moment, two new flavours (well one’s not so new) have demanded my
attention. Back by popular demand for a limited period with yummy
chocolate cookie pieces, swirls of chocolate fudge sauce is the ever pop-
ular Fossil Fuel. To help celebrate its return for 2011, Ben & Jerry’s have
given us an additional treat of chocolate peace signs as well as giving it a
Fair trade twist. Now, I must admit I have never tried this flavour before,
but as I’m a fan of chocolate and fudge, I enjoyed every mouthful. And
just in case you were wondering, I did not have the whole tub to myself.
The second flavour which is completely new is Coconutterly Fair, a
chunk-tastically delicious choice. Amazingly, it did not taste overly of
coconut, but has a nice velvety, even dreamy caramel-coconut taste.The
chocolate ice-cream with coconut caramel swirls and chocolately cov-
ered coconut caramel crunch pieces is a sure winner and a flavour you
could eat all day or share with friends - especially when we have sum-
mer as our excuse!
‘Wich and Coconutterly Fair are available right now from selected
supermarkets, with Fossil Fuel making a special comeback to selected
Sainsbury’s stores. As Ben & Jerry’s continue their commitment to the
Fair trade programme whilst also creating brilliant flavours for all to enjoy,
we at the Bite Magazine will do our upmost to suppor t their cause (sup-
pose we’ll just
have
to buy a few more tubs in our weekly shop but we
don’t mind!); and thank Ben &Jerry’s for doing their bit to help farmers
