DESSERT
N
ow you’ve had that delicious and satisfying succu-
lent rib-eye steak or the lamb rack chops for din-
ner, it’s time for some long overdue and well-
deserved desser t. Forget the warm apple pie
with its melt in the mouth pastry and juicy fruit in
the middle, or the eye-watering strawberry
cheesecake with the dreamy creamy mascarpone
and crumbly biscuit base, just for one moment...
it’s time to feast your eyes on some
‘gelato delizioso’
(that’s Italian for
delicious ice cream by the way).
Our wonderful friends at Ben & Jerry’s have added yet another
awesome creation to its Fair trade family, and have named the
newbie ‘Wich (as in sandwich). This is because the luscious
desser t combines ‘dairyingly delicious vanilla and chocolately
chip ice-cream, sandwiched between two chewy chocolate chunk
cookies’ (mmm yum!). It’s the ideal desser t finale to devour after a nice
gourmet meal (make sure you leave enough room!); or if you’re in a
hurry, you can still enjoy the goodness of Ben & Jerry’s latest invention
on the move.
Ben & Jerry’s star ted their humble beginnings in 1978, with
childhood friends and dedicated activists Ben Cohen and Jerry
Greenfield setting up shop in a renovated gas station in
Burlington, Vermont (USA). Their innovative flavours made
from fresh Vermont milk, cream and large por tions of
whatever ingredients they felt tasted good on the day of
making ensured that they were an instant success in the
local community. Since then they have been churning out
flavour after flavour to the delight of our appreciative
palate.
The two co-founders are very committed to “making sure
people get their fair share of the pie.” Since 2005, they have
been leading the way in using Fair trade-cer tified ingredients in
their products, and were the first ever ice cream company in
the world to do so. Even today, they are racing ahead as the first
ice cream company to make a significant commitment to Fair trade
across its global por tfolio, with 60% of their flavoured varieties already
cer tified.
