So have there been any other meetings as
a result of your new manager, Doc
McGhee?
There’s a place we play in Los Angeles called the Tar
Pit; there’s a real authentic feel about the place with its
ar t deco and swanky feel. A lot of industry people go
there and one of Doc’s friends, a guy called Leslie
Greif who helped discover The Beatles, saw us there.
He told Doc to come see us and from the quotes in
the papers, within the first number, he wanted to sign
us.
At present you’re an unsigned band?
Yeah, but we’re not trying to get signed. It’s 2011 and
the music industry is so different now. There are no
formulas and in my mind, I think the best thing to do
is form your own label and deal with your own distri-
bution; that’s what we plan to do.
Our desire right now is doing what we do and it’s
easier listening to ourselves instead of voices outside
of that. In the long run the masses get something
more pure. It’s funny how the record companies play
the guessing game on what the people want. It’s not
about fitting into a mode, or being accepted or not
accepted; at the end of the day it’s about making the
music that makes your soul sing.
Your vocal sound is authentic with some
real elements of past soul singers that I
could highlight such as Otis Redding and
Wilson Pickett. Was your sound some-
thing you had to work on?
I had a base as far as technique goes within theatre,
but definitely doing everything opposite of the theatre
is what got me to where I am right now.You know in
theatre, you’re expected to sing a cer tain way. I got rid
of those boundaries, and I know I’m not holding back
as the music moves me. As with par tying and doing all
the crazy things you do, I would say a lot of that con-
tributes to the sound and texture of my voice.
How do you find being on the shores of
the U.K?
We feel at home in London; we feel accepted and
look forward to playing throughout the UK.We enjoy
building a like-minded community of friends and hav-
ing people coming to see us. Perhaps you’ll really show
us your city. We look forward to bringing a high cali-
bre of live performances, with a passion that will cre-
ate a platform through music which the people
haven’t seen in a long while. That’s our mission.
