Josef Salvat - Hustler
A
ustralian singer Josef Salvat is to soon
release his second single ‘Hustler’
via the Sticky Lips Music label. His
first single ‘This Life’ garnered attention
and praise from
The Guardian
newspaper,
amongst others, which described his
music as “intriguing, intelligent, tantalisingly
twisted stuff…”
Certainly, the lyrics to his latest single
are in places eyebrow
raising,
attention
grabbing, and even
gender bending, with
lines such as: “You will
call me a harlot / You
will call me a whore
/ See I’m a man now
/ I’m worth so much
more…” And with
further lyrics describing
himself as having “…the
body of a lover with a
masochist’s brain…”
it’s obvious that Salvat
if nothing else knows
how to win audience’s
attention and cause
something of a delicious
stir. Musically, the song
is slow but powerful,
mostly sparse in places
with just a distant piano
or a thunderously
simple nearby drumbeat. Salvat sings in a
way that is delicate and sleepy, and which
sounds almost like the spoken word
ramblings of a man who is disorientated
and lost, and yet also somehow confident
and sure. It has the ingredients to surely
become something of a hit, if nothing else
because of its simplistic power and equally
simplistic yet savvy and shrewd memorable
moments.
Having spent a short time supporting
Willy Moon in Brighton and gigging in
London, Josef Salvat recently returned to
Brighton for an appearance at The Great
Escape Festival. Salvat might just be “one
to watch” in the music and gig universe,
as something suggest he could well be
generating even more attention and
notoriety as time passes on. Look out for
him; at this early stage it’s impossible to
guess what he just might do next.

Dexters - StartToRun
E
ast London band Dexters have recently
released their second single, ‘Start To
Run’ and the group has already received
positive reviews and recognition from such
important publications as the
NME,
as well
as more surprising sources such as
The Sun.
Signed to Acid Jazz Records, Dexters is
formed of five members, lead singer Tom
Rowlett, guitarists Chris Heggie and Ben
Debo, bassist Vincent Dignan, and drummer
Chris Mardon. Formed in 2011, they grew
up together on East London housing estates
and, over time, collected a range of tastes
and musical influences that included The
Kinks, especially the appeal of Ray Davies’
nostalgic and witty lyrics, the anarchy,
aggression, and attitude of the original punk
spirit so masterfully woven into the music
of The Clash and The Specials, and the
simplicity of the songs of The La’s.
Musically,‘Start To Run’ is the kind of fast
paced, catchy indie rock song with positive
and uplifting melodies and Londoner
accented vocals that we’ve come to instantly
recognise in recent years. Accompanied by
B-side ‘Why Seal Your Fate’, the single is
available as both a download and as a 7” disc.
If their previous single,‘Recover’ is anything to go by, of which the 7” format sold out in
just two hours and which was added to XFM’s Evening Playlist as a result, then Dexters
will have little to worry about in regards to the popularity of their second offering.
Their live performances have seen them play at Abbey Road Studios forAbsolute Radio,
as well as tour with a large number of bands such as Courteeners,The Happy Mondays,
The Enemy,TheView, Miles Kane, and Glasvegas. They can be seen at Liverpool’s X &Y
Festival in July, so fans in the area had better not miss out.
