London is renowned
for producing influential
and groundbreaking design talent. In an
already saturated industry, it is only the
determined,different and fashion forward
who make an impact and a selection
of London’s emerging designers are
doing just that, paving the road for
an electrifying fashion future.
Regarded as the first place
to find new and inspirational
designers, Vauxhall Fashion
Scout is a key element of
London Fashion Week. The
‘Ones toWatch’
show provides
an unrivalled platform for
emerging designers and
plays a major role in the
rise of new design talent.
The
spring/summer
2013 catwalk, which
took place on 15
th
September, showcased
the collections of Ming
Pin Tien, Charlotte
Simpson, Hana Cha and
Hellen van Rees.
Opening the show
was Taiwanese designer Ming
Pin Tien, who helped solidify
London’s reputation for breeding new
fashion talent with his statement cage
like leather buckle formations, impressive
pattern making cutting and graphic prints.
Ming Pin Tien combined feminine design
and masculine power in his collection with
the use of a nude palette, soft feminine
fabrics and multi-layered hems in contrast
with his tough masculine military crop
jackets and coats.
The London College of Fashion
graduate showed depth in his conceptual
approach, proving modern fashion to
be a worthy art form. In his exploration
of human character, Ming’s collection
presents a warrior woman. The use of
floating dresses and feminine colours
underneath the cadged body armour
represents the hidden emotions within
this strong protagonist.
Backstage, Ming smiles anxiously,
fumbling with his clothes as camera
shutters snap simultaneously. Despite
his timid exterior, Ming has a strong
drive for success, “I could not ever see
myself doing anything else.” Indeed, the
determined designer has gathered nine
years’ worth of experience in the fashion
industry including work assisting emerging
Taiwanese womenswear designer Jolin
Wu and a job as a visual merchandiser for
an influential fashion boutique in Taipei.
