bitetravel T he Great Wall of China (or Wànlǐ Cháng- chéng in Mandarin, meaning 'ten thou- sand li long wall’) deserves to be written about with the same sweep and lyricism that defines its presence across the landscape. Imagine a ribbon of stone and earth unfurling across mountains and deserts, a line so vast it seems to stitch together heaven and earth. To walk upon it is to step into a dialogue with cen- turies, to feel the pulse of dynasties that rose and fell, and to sense the ambition of emperors who believed they could hold back the tides of history with mortar and brick. This fascinating landmark in the Huairou Dis- trict is a series of overlapping constructions that formed the most extensive military architecture in the world. Its earliest incarnations date back to the Qin Dynasty, China’s first imperial dynas- ty, in the third century BCE, when Emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered the linking of regional walls to protect against northern nomadic tribes. These primitive fortifications were made of tamped earth, crude yet effective, and they set the precedent for what would become a colos- sal undertaking. Later dynasties, particularly the Ming, transformed the Wall into the iconic stone-and-brick structure most familiar today, complete with watchtowers, garrisons, and elaborate passes. The Ming era’s contribution was not only practical but aesthetic, creating a wall that was as imposing in appearance as it was in function. Walking along its ridges, one senses the immense labour that went into its creation. Sol- diers, peasants, and convicts were conscripted to build it, often under brutal conditions. Many perished, and legends say their bones were buried within the Wall itself, though historians debate the truth of this. What is undeniable is the human cost of building the Wall, as much a monument to sacrifice as it is to defence. Its length, measured at over 21,000 kilometres, defies comprehension. Samantha Morgan marvels at the awe-inspiring Great Wall of China, deemed the longest wall in the world and one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
