bitetravel Chaotic City NAPLES T he morning sun spills over ochre rooftops, wash- ing the Bay of Naples in gold while the brooding outline of Mount Vesuvius looms like a sleeping titan. Centuries whisper through cracked stones and shadowy chapels along the narrow, cobbled alleys of the historic centre. Balconies burst with flowering gerani- ums, and drying laundry flutters like family crests above you. The city dares you not to fall under its spell. Its unruly and poetic beauty is more akin to a Caravaggio than a Botticelli. Located in the Campania region, Naples sits on the western coast of the Italian peninsula facing the Mediter- ranean Sea. It was founded by the Greeks as Neapolis (New City) more than 2,500 years ago. Beneath your feet lies an underground network of catacombs, aqueducts, Roman amphitheatres, and ancient Greek ruins. Above ground, Baroque churches jostle with Brutalist apartment blocks. Medieval castles stare down bustling markets, and mo- torini (small-engine motorcycles) streak past Renaissance palazzi like mischievous spirits of progress. History bleeds through stucco and erupts in grand gestures around street corners. A walk through the long, straight, and narrow Spaccanapoli streets in Naples’ historic centre is like slipping between parallel realities. The city’s electric unpredictability is part of its magnetism. Daily life spills into the streets with operatic zeal, blending the sacred and the profane in one breath. A funeral procession might pass a graffiti mural of Diego Maradona, Naples’ adopted saint, with mourners bowing as a child kicks a football around their feet.
