bitecatwalk E7W Studio Y iki Wung seamlessly blends Eastern and Western cultures in her presentation. The AW24 collection, named ‘Apsaras’, draws inspiration from the murals of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang while engaging with Western streetwear. The runway was packed with original takes on well-known garments, such as cargo pants flowing from the model like a skirt. Or, a thick coat playing with the proportions of the model’s body, accompanied by tights and boots made from the same red and black patterned fabric. I enjoyed how this designer played with the body when styling bold prints. This collection paid homage to the millennium-old Dun- huang culture, which has endured numerous challenges throughout history. By deconstructing and reinterpreting its damaged mural textures and disappearing patterns, E7W Studio contributes to the sustainable development of cultural heritage whilst remaining current with its designs. E7W Studio brought the ruined murals back from history, allowing the characters to walk for the first time on the runway. Afmn F orget-me-not flowers were gifted throughout history as a reminder to hold loved ones close. It also represented a vow of remembrance despite distance or time. Afmn’s classic style collection suggests a similar vow from designer Ophelia Song. This presentation was built on classic Western and Eastern silhouettes with timeless fabrics in shades of black and white. Some looks, such as the white draped trousers and a cropped structured leather jacket, felt steadfast like a plant stem. Others were more delicate, resembling the thin petals of a flower. Only once did the flower motif make it directly onto a garment. Styled with a three-layered ruffled skirt and sparkly tied belt, this was the most detailed look on the runway. But every look had an element of thoughtful design. Avant-garde combined with more easily worn styles embody sweetness and structure throughout this collection.
