bitedesignerprofile B orn into a family of tailors in China, surrounded by fabric and craftsmanship, Anna Yang devel- oped a connection to the art of clothing from an early age. It influenced her decision to pur- sue a career in fashion and imbued her with a respect for traditional garment construction. “I was always brows- ing around my family’s factory, spending a lot of time watching my parents working and trying to learn their art,” she told Metal Magazine online. “They showed me the [whole] process of garment making. Soon, I [could] create pieces of my own, and then, I naturally went on the path of studying design.” She developed her brand, Annakiki, in 2012, blending her Chinese heritage with a strong influence from European fashion. “Annakiki is made from combining two names: mine and my sister’s. We are deeply tied, so I wanted to include her name in the brand.” As an independent de- signer, Yang initially conceived the creation process. “I don’t want to follow the trends or how the market moves because it is becoming very commercial.” Instead, she tries to keep the brand’s DNA intact despite changes in the fashion industry. The designer is deeply inspired by surrealism; her col- lections contain elements that appear dreamlike, uncon- ventional, or even slightly otherworldly. She channels these influences into her avant-garde designs to create unexpected silhouettes, playful details, and imaginative texture. Yang is also fascinated with technology, which reflects artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and digital themes. You can expect to see metallic fabrics, digital graphics, and bold architectural shapes in her designs. Five years after its inception, Annakiki debuted at Milan Fashion Week with an alien-themed Fall-Winter 2017 collection influenced by Roswell’s UFO incident in 1947, which injected futurism and an explosion of colours.
