Pow! Bam! Comics and Painting—A Meeting at the End of the 20th Century’ at the Zoumboulakis Gallery in Athens, Greece. This exhibition, which ran from 6 June to 20 July 2024, explored the profound influence of comics on contemporary paintings. Curated by visual artist and comic creator Spyros Verykios in collaboration with art historian Thanasis Moutsopoulos, the exhibition bridged the disparate worlds of comics and fine art, demonstrating their symbiotic relationship and mutual influence over the decades. The concept behind ‘Wow! Pow! Bam!’ highlighted how comics and painting have influenced each other and expand- ed the boundaries of both art forms. As Moutsopoulos not- ed, the 1960s marked a pivotal moment when artists began incorporating mass culture elements, particularly comics, into their works. Conversely, comic artists started integrating modern art techniques into their storytelling, thus giving rise to new genres within comics and painting. This symbiotic re- lationship has allowed a dynamic exchange of ideas, pushing the boundaries of traditionally considered high and low art.
