bitewatches Alpinist Principle A lpina Watches’ signature logo of a watch circle in- side an equilateral red triangle symbolises the fine watchmaking company based in Geneva, Switzerland, founded by Gottlieb Hauser in 1883. The logo was de- veloped from the Matterhorn Mountain in Switzerland. At 4,478 metres above sea level, it’s one of the highest summits in Europe, overlooking the town of Zermatt. Its beautiful peak and snowy frame make this rocky monument one of the most visually ap- pealing mountains in the Aosta Valley. After finding it challenging to source parts and materials for his watches, Hauser created a union of independent watchmak- ers who could share the necessary components and ideas. The collective was called Alpina Swiss Watchmakers Corporation, also known as the Alpinists. The horological innovative watch company became the source of several patents and innovative calibres, including the 877, the ‘engine’ of the Alpina techno, the hand-winding 592, and the famous 17-jewel self-winding 584.
