bitecuisine A few steps from Covent Garden station, you’ll find the newly opened steak restaurant Gaucho pay- ing tribute to its roots. Located in an extension of the historic Royal Opera House, it offers signa- ture Argentinian steaks, fine wines and classic cocktails. The ground floor includes a bar and terrace with a bright, wel- coming atmosphere where diners can watch the world go by. Downstairs offers a darker but beautifully lit ambience with luminous red tints and soft pop music setting the mood. The story behind Gaucho is centred on the Argentine cowboy tending to the cattle grazing in the lush meadows of Las Pam- pas. The bountiful vineyards in the foothills of the dramatic mineral-rich Andes mountain range, the iconic asado barbe- cue and the modern tango shows of Buenos Aires are inspi- rations to enjoy the world’s tender steaks and Latin American cuisine accompanied by indigenous Malbec wines. Their first restaurant opened in Swallow Street, Piccadilly, in 1993 and has grown to eighteen restaurants. Gaucho’s beef comes from Argentinian, premium Black An- gus cattle bred at hand-selected farms, reared by partners they have worked with for years. The cattle graze on seventeen dif- ferent grass types from the Pampas provinces that are 100% natural, allowing them to enjoy a lush, free-range lifestyle in an area famed for its fertile soil. The food and wine Gaucho serve is also authentic. They carry some of the finest global wines and the largest selection of Argentinian wines outside the country. After we arrived, we were led downstairs to our table by Camilla, where an open kitchen showed the chefs calmly at work. The space was decorated with dark wooden round and square tables, banquette seating along one side and pleated curtain wall details mimicked the drapery from the West End Theatres. Most seatings are booth-style with green leath- er, suede back and patterned covering. Our excellent and knowledgeable table host, Aggelos, served and looked after us throughout the evening. Our first cocktails were Flor Del Mundo with Botanist Gin, St Germain elderflower liqueur, yuzu, reconstructed lemon juice and matcha which gave it a rich green colour. The Honey Punch with Ron Zacapa 23 rum, Hennessy VS Cognac, Remy Martin 1738 Cognac, black walnut and honey is presented in Jada Brookes dined at the newly opened Gaucho in London’s Cov- ent Garden and was impressed with the atmosphere, food and hospitality.
