bitewatches TheDeep Blue Sea I n sailing, a spinnaker, constructed of a brightly coloured lightweight fabric like nylon, is a sail used for the direction of the wind. It can be symmetric or asymmetric - the first type is the same shape on either side of a vertical centre line with the sail head or top attached to the halyard, and the second has a tri- angular shape with three different corners: head, clew and tack. The head connects to the halyard, the tack fastens to a tackline, and two sheets attach to the clew and lead aft, one on either side of the mast. Spinnaker Watches, made in Hong Kong but with movements from Japan, take their name from this constructive apparatus and are in- spired by the history of diving and dive watches. Its ethos is centred on man’s ability to traverse, discover and live among the waves of the open sea in a legacy of bravery, adventure, skill and ingenuity. “Whether it’s deep sea diving or cutting edge mono-hulled catama- ran zipping along the sea, our ability to command the blue world and our affinity for the open water is instinctive.” Its timepieces are inspired by the birth of the scuba age in the 1950s and modern eco-efficient technologies. It uses innovative develop- ment technology to create compelling nautical pieces. “It is the sea and crafts that glide and dive into her waters that inspire so much of our design. The spirit of aquatic influence lies at the heart of each Spinnaker collection.” With a combination of material, design and craftsmanship, it pays tribute to a technical command and life be- neath, beyond and beside the sea. Spinnaker wristwatches have stories, such as the 43 mmWreck time- piece honouring the fallen ships and aircraft with its distressed, erod- ed dial. It’s designed with a unidirectional bezel, rose gold case, green dial and Miyota 8218 automatic movement, with 100 metres of water resistance. Croft is named after US Navy diving instructor Robert Croft who became the first person to free dive to a depth of 200 feet. The watch has the same features as Wreck but with a blue dial and 150 metres of water resistance. Hull California is a 42 mm vintage-inspired timepiece built to last a lifetime. It features a streamlined stainless steel case echoing the slipstreamed seafaring vehicles. It has a fixed bezel, textured granite black dial whose indices are highly legible at sea, Seiko NH35 TMI automatic movement and 100 metres of water resistance. The robust Tesei Bronze channels the spirit of naval soldiers. Its stunning wave pattern blue dial is framed in a 43 mm bronze case with a unidirec- tional bezel, automatic movement and leather strap. Fleuss pays homage to Henry Fleuss, a pioneering diving engineer who invented the first reliable breathing apparatus in 1878. It has a 43 mm steel case, fixed bezel, black dial, leather strap, Seiko NH35 TMI automatic movement and 150 metres of water resistance. Other diver watches include the 43 mm stainless steel Boettger wristwatch that houses the Miyota 9015 automatic movement and has three hands and a date indicator. It’s completed with a stainless steel bracelet with a fold-over buckle. Spinnaker Watches
