The Bite Magazine - Spring/Summer 2023 - Issue 33
biteperformance Post-Interval Main Show M y favourite performances after the interval were Boy Blue from the UK; Company Nicolas Huchard from France; ILL-Abilities from the Netherlands and Brazil; and Les Twins, Rubix and Missy from France. The renowned Boy Blue performed ‘Looking Back, Moving Forward’. I was immensely immersed by the group’s tight sets: from solos to up to 30 danc- ers’ pieces. I felt like the 17-minute-plus set featured more than 50 dancers as they knew how to take charge of the stage. They were so tight they would have put an army regiment to shame. What I truly loved about the mini performances within the set were they mainly featured the hands and arms as the main dance instruments. They accentuated the beats and tone of the music with isolations, vogue-esque contemporary pops, fluidity and flows, sometimes in unison, sometimes in complementary moves. It was just so brilliant! At the end of their set, the audi- ence exploded! Company Nicolas Huchard, featuring Barefoot Divas, was five female dancers that oozed sass and female empowerment. En- compassing contemporary Afro-centric moves and dancing to some Afrobeat music, they worked their bodies in an un- ashamed style of voluptuousness and femininity. Their lyrical The Interval H our-long intervals should be a thing, especially when there’s so much to do. From a rap performance with Haze on Saturday and SirJordanV on Sunday up on the mezzanine; to the Graff Zone, where lessons on how to tag, a consequent artistic movement of the hip-hop culture, were being demonstrated, to The Training Ground on the 2nd circle where there were dance lessons on the freshest moves by Breakin’s dance instructors Bismark and Olivia. Add to what was going on in the Lilian Baylis Studio, next door, where Lerato Seyonya from South Africa performed ‘Safe’, Dorine Mugisha from Tanzania performed ‘Origins’, and Broken Pen & Ryan Soultribe from the UK performed ‘This is no Longer’. Each gave amazing lyrical dance perfor- mances, each telling a profound story where spoken word and dance combined. All three performances were so brilliant that I attended on both days! Attending impressive performances during an interval feels like a bonus and special. Given that I’ve been to several of these Breakin’ Convention events, it certainly felt like so much more this year. Boy Blue
