The Bite Magazine - Spring/Summer 2023 - Issue 33
W hen you see the shark in The Meg, you auto- matically think of the 1975 Jaws (if you were around then or watched it later). The 2018 horror/sci-fi film, an adapta- tion of Steve Alten’s Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, took place on a deep-sea submersible, whereas Jaws was set on the fictional Amity Island. Megalodon, the 75-foot-long prehistoric shark thought to be extinct, attacks the scientists at the bottom of the Pacific. Rescue diver Jonas Taylor is recruited to save them and the sea from the unimagina- ble threat. Five years later, Meg 2: The Trench, directed by Ben Wheat- ley, sees Taylor leading a research team on an explora- tory dive into the deepest ocean depths. Their voyage spirals into chaos when an evil mining oper- ation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. The team must battle colossal, prehistoric sharks and relentless environment plun- derers and outrun, outsmart and outswim their merciless predators. This larger-than-life adrenaline rush supersizes the 2018 block- buster and threatens to burst your heart out of your chest with fear. It takes action to higher heights and even greater depths with massive colossal Megs bringing the most electrifying cinematic experience of the year. Even the trailer makes you shrink in terror when the shark opens its gigantic mouth to consume you through the glass. Jason Statham, Li Bingbing and Cliff Curtis reprise their roles, with Able Wanama- kok, Sienna Guillory, Wu Jing and others joining the cast.
