Hollywood couple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall carried mon- ogrammed Hartmann steam trunks on their travels. Ital- ian socialite Clara Agnelli, formerly Princess Clara von Fürstenberg and granddaughter of Fiat founder Gianni Agnelli, had her Goyard luggage painted with her initial ‘C’ in red or heat-stamped in black on soft leather items. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes and a physician, was also a devotee Goyard luggage own- er. He commissioned the brand to create a writing trunk so he could continue his work during his adventures over- seas. The case was similar to a common trunk but trans- formed into a writing desk completed with a bookcase, typewriter and hidden storage space for his developing manuscripts. Goyard displayed it at the Salon Art + De- sign show at New York's Park Avenue Armoury in 2016. With brands like Samsonite, Tumi, Ted Baker, Rimowa and Antler making modern and more durable suitcases, it’s excellent to see vintage-inspired luggage brand Hey- Chesto maintain the traditional look. Founded by Tanya Ames, an avid traveller, who has experienced backpack- ing around the continents and family travel in and out- side the UK, the sophisticated cases are designed with an interior that conceals an ingenious shelving system to keep clothes neatly organised. Having learned the importance of minimising stress to maximise enjoyment whilst travelling, a family trip visit- ing a friend in France where they had to share one room suddenly filled her with trepidation. “How would I pre- vent a ‘floordrobe’ in our soon-to-be-shared bedroom after I’d neatly packed everyone’s suitcase?” While she drove the last four hours, Tanya and her eldest son, Ben, challenged themselves to come up with different solutions on how to keep the clothes tidy and organised without unpacking. They searched the internet for a cabin-sized suitcase with interior shelving used as a chest of drawers away from home but did not find any. HeyChesto was born from this experience. “The aim is to bring HeyChesto to the market for the stylish traveller who wants to spend time explor- ing and not unpacking,” Tanya explained. “It’s the kind of travel accessory that people will see as an extension of their wardrobe, a case for people who want to have it dis- played in their homes, not tucked away in their attics.” Available in four elegantly stylish colours, the St Mawes, named after the village on the eastern side of Falmouth harbour, on the Cornish south coast, in navy blue ve- gan leather has burgundy, white and navy webbing with a navy and white stripe lining. Another city-influenced style is The Cambridge, found on the River Cam in east- ern England and home to the prestigious University of Cambridge. Its plum vegan leather suitcase has burgundy, white and navy webbing lined with burgundy and white stripes.
