Travel News Autumn-Winter 2021 bitetravel The Eden Hotel Collection S et within 275 acres of beautiful countryside and rolling valleys in the Dartmoor National Park in Devon is the striking neo-Elizabethan Bovey Castle. It was originally built by the WH Smith dynasty in 1907 and then transformed into a hotel in 1930 by the Great Western Railway which ap- pealed to couples and families alike. Bovey Castle offers 60 rooms and suites with 22 self-catering country lodges scat- tered within the estate’s stunning grounds. The individually designed bedrooms are located in the origi- nal manor house and private mews, with most offering sweep- ing views of the woodland, valley, gardens or Dartmoor. The castle’s three-storey lodges feature three en-suite bedrooms, sleeping up to six adults and eight people in total. At approx- imately 185 square metres, they are ideal for weekends away with friends or family, with full kitchen facilities, an open plan lounge and a dining area that leads out onto a balcony with views over the grounds. Built using local granite and vaulted with English Oak, each property reflects the character of Devon’s ancient moorlands, shaded by woodland and bordered by lakes and manicured lawns. It’s a real home away from home, where guests in the lodges can enjoy total privacy and also take advantage of the facilities of a 5-star hotel should they wish. For cosy evenings in, the hotel’s chefs can provide freshly prepared, home-style meals delivered to the door to enjoy without leaving the com- fort of the lodge. During your stay, you can engage in long walks through the National Park or practise your golf swings at the 18-hole cham- pionship golf course designed by golf architect John Frederick Abercromby. There are experiences such as wine and sloe gin making, clay pigeon shooting, archery, fly fishing and off-road driving to participate in and around the estate. For children, a tour of the Deer Park, carriage ride and meeting the chickens and ferrets, amongst other activities will keep them occupied. Relax in the Elan Spa that uses ESPA products in treatments to relax, revive and restore the mind, body and spirit. The Gen- tlemen’s Quarter is an exclusive retreat for the discerning gen- tleman, offering traditional treatments including a luxury wet shave using Truefitt & Hill groom products. Bovey Castle hosts two award-winning restaurants - the 1 AA Rosette Smith’s Brasserie, with all-day dining and a menu in- spired by the Mediterranean. Guests can sit back and relax on the terrace overlooking the valley and River Bovey. Opening next year is the Great Western Grill, paying homage to the ho- tel’s history, with roots planted in classical cookery. It will re- call the glamour of the restaurant’s Art Deco origins and ech- oes of a bygone era. Both restaurants will use locally sourced fresh produce in their menus. To travel to the hotel, the nearest train station is Exeter St, Da- vid which is 17 miles away from the property. https://www.cameronhouse.co.uk Images courtesy of ASA Luxury
