The Bite Magazine - Autumn/Winter 2021 - Issue 30

BOCO bitelifestyle T he sleepy town of Herning in 1950s Denmark saw the arrival of two young cabinet makers who re- cently acquired a new, modest but perfectly formed factory. Two years earlier, Jens Ærthøj and Tage Mølholm started their furniture business in the hot summer of 1952, intending to introduce quality Danish furniture to a broader audience. They sought to meet the growing list of orders while maintaining high-quality standards by com- bining their traditional craftsmanship with Denmark’s wave of late industrialisation. Thanks to this design revolution, machines were more af- fordable, efficient and accurate. By investing wisely, this sped up production and kept costs low, without compromising the quality that customers loved. Jens and Tage stood on the principles that made Danish design admirable globally with simplicity, craftsmanship, elegant functionality and quality materials at the forefront. This was first seen in their popular extendable teak dining table and dining chairs. In the early years, BoConcept manufactured mostly dining room furniture and then expanded into cabinets, wall sys- tems and other furnishings. The brand’s name derives from the Danish word ‘bo’ meaning living, so in essence BoCon- cept means ‘the concept of living’. Since they specialise in customisable modern furniture and accessories, BoConcept collaborates with acclaimed designers that have produced incredible works such as the Osaka sofa by renowned Dan- ish designer and architect Anders Nørgaard. Nørgaard has a special talent for designing modular soft systems and comfortable, stunning armchairs. Staying true to his Danish design heritage, he inherited these concepts during his upbringing and education. “I grew up with func- tionalism and craftsmanship. Danish architects of the ‘50s and ‘60s were friends of my parents and among my teachers at the School of Architecture.” He characterises his designs with beautiful lines, minimal styling and perfect propor- tions and key functionality. Other award-winning design experts contributing to Bo- Concept’s elegant and well-considered products include Morten Georgsen. This incredible creative has a talent for working with the right dimensions and colours to ensure the Jada Brookes discovers BoConcept’s extraordinary approach to designing, producing and selling contemporary furniture and allowing its customers to create a personal home with their comprehensive in-home or store interior design service.
