Howev- er, several months after she ended her relationship with model-turned-chef Isaac Carew in 2019, she released ‘Don’t Start Now’, a nu-disco dance track that marked a new chapter in her life. “I chose to put this song out first so I could close one chapter of my life and start another,” she told Rolling Stone . “Into a new era with a new sound! It’s about moving on and not allowing anyone to get in the way of that.” The new era included a new relationship with Anwar and releasing her studio album, Future Nostalgia, in 2020, following her 2017 self-titled debut. She also dyed her hair in different colours to signify the beginning of ‘DL2’. Speaking about the album, she said, “I feel like you could dance through the whole record. There [are} lots of nostal- gic elements to it. There’s a sample in there from the 1930s. It’s just a party.” She also revealed she didn’t consider her change of direction to be ‘risky’, which we agree with. Although the song doesn’t reveal who the mystery ex is, it could possibly be Issac Carew, with whom she had an on- off relationship for almost five years. The couple first met in 2015 and dated two years before splitting up in Febru- ary 2017, reportedly ending on good terms and remaining friends after their split. They rekindled their relationship in January 2018, after Dua split from Paul Klein following a year of dating, but over a year later, the singer and mod- el-chef split again in June 2019. Dua’s producer, Ian Kirkpatrick, who started production work on ‘Don’t Start Now’ in early January 2019, had no idea it would be a massive hit. “At the time we were writing it, the urban format was taking over the radio waves,” he said. “It was very prominent.
