Designer Profile bitefashion Magda Butrym Jada Brookes admires Magda Butrym’s Pre- Fall and Fall/Winter 2020 collections that accentuate the female form with a touch of masculinity. I n 2014, emerging fashion designer Magda Butrym pre- sented her signature AW15 collection which was widely hailed as the most exciting fashion debut of the season in Poland. Her success was contributed to having honed her skills designing for high-end Polish labels Portofino and La Mania, while her arrival on the fashion scene was deemed by many as a ‘breath of fresh air’. Later that year, photos showed Kim Kardashian flaunting her curves in Butrym’s plaited leath- er skirt. The dramatic draping and asymmetry of Butrym’s design sig- nature are manifested in ruffles and cutout shoulders. The lan- guage of the label includes exaggeration, ruching, and glam- orous fabrics transformed into wearable objets d’art. If you’re looking for unique, high-quality pieces that combine the most delicate materials available with specialised craftsmanship, then Magda Butrym is the go-to brand for you. Most of the pieces come from various parts of Poland, such as Podhale, Silesia, Nowy Targ, and Warsaw. You will find garments within the collections are stable, struc- tured, with a fluid air of femininity. Whilst there is a lot of in- spiration from menswear, it is clear that Butrym is designing for women who enjoy putting a slight twist on tradition. Her clothing has been described as having a Parisian approach that can be compared to legendary French labels Celine or Yves Saint Laurent of the 1960s. Still, the designer herself has cited American designer Halston of the 1970s as a significant inspi- ration.
